Motificat Crochet Pattern

Crochetology exercise: given the square pattern and the underlying trims, create a piece of clothing. My project is a pair of baby shorts and a bra to use for swimming.

The challenge here is to first do a half version of the pattern. The next challenge is to determine the arrangement of the motifs to make the shape the desired size especially for the bra top.

Motif Lace Tanga Crochet Pattern

Inspired by the pretty colorful floral embroidery of Journelle’s Valery Aria thong, I decided to knit mine using a natural color lace weight silk camel yarn and a 1mm steel hook. I used two threads held together of this fine yarn.

Note: this is not a complete pattern but rather a description of the pattern with general instructions.

The thong is made up of octagonal-shaped motifs joined together to form a strip. I made two strips: one for the front and one for the back.

The horse is made by joining the yarn to one of the picots of the motifs and working in double crochet stitch. The crotch decreases downward and then increases to do the back. Then I made some simple scallops (ch 3, sc in the same st, 2 sc in the same st, 2 sc, sc in the next st) along the edges of the crotch.

The next step was to fill in the gaps along the top half of the motifs (where the motifs are joined). I used simple long chain stitches to fill in these holes. This makes the top edge of the thong even while the bottom remains lacy and bumpy. Above the uniform border I made a header of m.a. and chains and then a last row of small scallops. The header is where the ties are woven on the back.
